If you are thinking about migrating to or studying in Canada, you may have read about the requirements relating to IELTS scores and information about the different IELTS Band. The scoring system can be complicated and the IELTS requirements for different Canada immigration programs can vary. This blog will provide you with a summary of all the information you need to know regarding IELTS score when applying for migration to Canada:
The International English Language Testing System, commonly known as IELTS, is one of the most recognized international standardized tests of English language for non-native English speakers. There are two kinds of IELTS, namely IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. The former is designed for people applying for higher education or professional registration, while the latter test is geared for those planning to migrate to Canada, Australia and the UK.
Both versions include assessments for the four language skills: listening, writing, reading and speaking. It should be noted that the IELTS test can be taken by native English speakers as well.
IELTS results are reported as band scores on a scale of 1 to 9, with 1 being the lowest (non-user), and 9, the highest (an expert user). A score is given for each individual test component: listening, reading, speaking and writing. These scores will then be averaged and rounded to produce an overall IELTS band score.
Essentially, IELTS is comprised of four categories: listening, reading, speaking and writing, with a total exam time of under 3 hours. You have the choice to take the IELTS exam on paper or on a computer in select test locations. The Listening, Reading and Writing parts of the exam are on the same day without breaks in between. The Speaking test could either be held on the same day or seven days before or after that, depending on the test center’s arrangements.
For a paper-based IELTS exam, you will answer the Listening, Reading and Writing parts on paper, while the Speaking test will be carried out with a trained IELTS Examiner.
For computer-based IELTS exam, you would still need to have a face-to-face exam with a trained IELTS Examiner for the Speaking test, while the rest of the tests will be done on a computer.
