Study Pathways to Permanent Residence in Canada | Introduction of English Montreal School Board (EMSB)

According to CIC News, the latest figures they obtained from Immigration Canada show that the number of Hong Kong people who have been granted permanent residency in Canada and have landed has increased by 50% compared to pre-pandemic, and the number of Hong Kong people applying for study and work permits in Canada has increased fourfold.

Overall, the number of Hong Kong people immigrating to Canada is truly enormous. Is there any change in the cost of permanent residence in Canada due to the current economic inflation? Today, Simard & Associates would like to share with you.

Adjustment of Immigration Fees in 2022

Immigration Canada announced earlier that it will increase the fees for all permanent residency applications, including economic, family and humanitarian categories, on April 30, 2022. This is the first time since 2002 that the local immigration office has increased immigration fees to keep up with inflation and has decided to adjust them every two years thereafter.

In addition to the above application fee, applicants are required to pay a $500 permanent residency fee. This fee can be paid at the time of application or at the time of approval. If the applicant’s application for permanent residency is approved, this fee will be applied to the activation of permanent residency status.

Permanent Residence Fee

Permanent Residence Fee is mainly used to initiate residency status after the application is approved. Applicants are advised to pay the fee at the time of application to shorten the processing time; if the application is denied, the fee will be refunded.

Permanent residency fees are not applicable in the following cases:

  1. Dependent children of the principal applicant or guarantor
  2. Application for sponsorship of adopted children
  3. for the sponsorship of an orphaned sibling, niece, nephew or grandchild
  4. protected persons, including humanitarian and compassionate applicants and Convention refugees

It is important to note that the fees for permanent resident cards, permanent resident travel documents, certifications, or replacement immigration documents will not be increased. However, the fees for this category are generally lower in Canada compared to other countries including the United Kingdom, New Zealand, the United States and Australia.
