Canada Federal Government increases the Cap for Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)

02 April 2025  |  Canada

The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), administered by the federal government of Canada, is now accepting more applications.

In 2025, up to 25,000 sponsorship applications will be accepted by the government.

Ministerial Instructions issued in the Canada Gazette last March 22, 2025, state that some of the applications will be from the 2025 intake, while others will be from the 2024 intake.

Earlier this year, in January, the government declared that it would only process a maximum of 15,000 applications from the 2024 intake and that no additional applications would be received in 2025.

The administration did not specify the revised cap when it announced on March 7 that it would send out invitations in 2025.

When the PGP opens intake this year, Canadian citizens and permanent residents who filled out interest to sponsor forms during the 2020 intake and have not yet received an invitation to apply will have the opportunity to do so.

Those who successfully pass the PGP are granted permanent residence in Canada.

What is Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)?

One way to reunite with family members and obtain permanent residency is through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP).

The government uses a lottery to choose sponsors because the program’s demand greatly exceeds the number of slots offered.

As of right now, the program has been opened for enrollment once, in 2020. Since then, all invitations to sponsor have been delivered to persons who filled out interest forms for the 2020 intake.

What About the Canada Super Visa

Another option offered by the Canadian government allows parents and grandparents to go to Canada for extended stays with their family.

Eligible citizens and permanent residents may sponsor their parents or grandparents to visit them in Canada for years at a time under the Super Visa program.

Super Visas are valid for 10 years and can be extended for an additional 2 years, allowing holders to remain in Canada for up to 5 years at a time.

In addition to being granted visitor status, holders of Super Visas are required to get private health insurance for the duration of their visit.
