Applications to sponsor parents and grandparents for permanent residency will be accepted in 2025 from certain Canadians and permanent residents.
Canada’s immigration department declared on March 7, 2025, that it would be sending invitations to apply (ITAs) to prospective sponsors in 2025.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) declared in January 2025 that they would only be considering applications received in the 2024 intake and will not be sending out any new invites under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) this year.
According to this recent notification, foreign nationals who filed a form expressing interest in sponsoring under the PGP in 2020 may be invited to apply in 2025.
The administration pledged to provide more information in the upcoming months, but they did not specify when the invites would be sent.
Potential sponsors are chosen in random from the PGP pool by the IRCC using a lottery mechanism.
As of right now, everyone who filled out an interest form to sponsor for the 2020 intake has received an invitation to the current PGP program. The PGP’s intake has not yet reopened.
The super visa program allows Canadian citizens and foreign nationals who have been unable to sponsor their parents and grandparents under the PGP to sponsor their family to come to Canada for extended periods.

About the Parents and Grandparents Program
The pathway to permanent residency for family reunification is the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP).
It permits parents and grandparents to be sponsored for permanent residence in Canada by Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
In addition to complying with other standards, the sponsoring applicant must have a minimum income and their relative or relatives must be allowed entry into Canada.
The PGP cannot be applied directly.
Those who are qualified to sponsor must wait for an invitation to apply after submitting an interest to sponsor form to the federal government.
The pool of potential sponsors is chosen by random.
The PGP has not reopened intake since 2020, when it first began because to the high volume of interest in sponsor forms.
Since 2020, the government has sent ITAs to those who filled out interest-in-sponsor forms for the 2020 intake in each of the subsequent years.
What is Super Visa Program?
Parents and grandparents may be sponsored to live with Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and registered Indians for prolonged periods of time under the Super Visa program.
Super Visas often allow for numerous entries and can be granted for a maximum of ten years. Holders of super visas are considered temporary residents and are permitted to remain in Canada for a maximum of five years at a time, with the option to stay for an additional two years.
Foreign national candidates must acquire third-party health insurance for the duration of their stay in Canada, and sponsors must meet minimum income standards.
In order to give applicants more alternatives for obtaining coverage, the Canadian federal government recently relaxed the health insurance requirements for the Super Visa program.
