16 January 2025 | Canada
In 2025, a new global ranking of the most powerful passports in the world, the Canadian passport ranked in seventh position.
This is based on how many places Canadian passport holders can visit without a prior visa.

Additionally, this is the first time the Canadian passport has beaten the US passport.
The United States dropped two spots from its seventh-place rating last year to ninth place this year.
However, the Canadian passport has remained in seventh place, identical to its 2024 ranking. This represents an improvement from 2023, when the Canadian passport came in at number eight.
According to the ranking, two nations that lifted visa requirements for Canadians in 2025 are Egypt and Brazil. However, Canadians are now need to have a visa in order to enter Gabon and Togo.

The Passport Index examines 199 distinct passports’ ability to enter 227 countries without a visa.
Singapore’s passport, which grants admission to 195 out of 227 countries globally, regained its position as the most powerful passport this year.
Japan, which granted visa-free entry to 193 locations, came next.
Afghanistan, which has visa-free travel to 26 countries, is at the bottom of the list.
The UAE has gained access to 72 additional destinations in the last ten years, making it one of the biggest “climbers” in the index. However, in 2025, it dropped to 10th place.
